About IAVPHS

The Indian Association of Veterinary Public Health Specialists (IAVPHS) was established on 3rd May 1997. The association focuses on broad areas of Veterinary Public Health including food safety, zoonoses, environmental hygiene, comparative pathology, biomedicine, and related public health fields under the umbrella of One Health. It has been organizing Annual conferences and National/ International Symposiums since 2002. Till now 19 such conferences have been organized in various places of the country. There are 1000+ active life members who drive the activities of IAVPHS with zeal to achieve the mandates and goals of the association.

The major objectives of the association are to promote research, education, and service in the field of veterinary public health, disseminate information in veterinary public health, provide a common platform to medical, veterinary, and allied professionals for mutual sharing of knowledge, network with other associations and organizations related to public health and allied fields, engage in nation building by helping to achieve the goal of “Health for All”.

The association also publishes the Journal of Veterinary Public Health, a broad-based bi-annual journal aimed at publishing high-quality basic and applied research on all aspects of veterinary public health, which includes food microbiology, meat/milk hygiene, communicable & infectious diseases, environmental hygiene, and allied aspects of veterinary public health.

About The University

The Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University (MAFSU) was formally established on 3rd December 2000 with headquarter at Nagpur. The MFSU is the largest veterinary and fishery sciences university in the country with five constituent Veterinary Colleges, one Post Graduate Institute of Veterinary & Animal Sciences, two Dairy Technology Colleges, two Colleges of Fishery Sciences, one dedicated institute of Wildlife Research and Training Centre, three Krishi Vigyan Kendras, and 100+ recognized schools offering diploma in livestock management and dairy production.

The contribution of the university in teaching, research, and extension education has been widely applauded in the form of 10 students getting Junior Research Fellowships; implementation of 21 externally funded research projects; registration of new buffalo breed Purnathadi; active participation in the organization of National level Mahapashudhan Expo at Shirdi; grant of two patents; active contribution in control of pandemic of Lumpy Skin Disease in cattle in Maharashtra in collaboration with the State Animal Husbandry Department; extending facilities and human resource for COVID-19 diagnosis during the pandemic, etc. With the new concepts of research and extension responsibility, the University plans to initiate and coordinate research projects with the institutions of ICAR and other Universities in India and abroad.

Each college under the university has some highly specialized and well-developed departments which include India’s first Veterinary Nuclear Medicine Center (VNMC) and Western Regional Referral Laboratory for Food Safety at Mumbai, Embryo Transfer Technology Laboratory and Mineral & Hormonal Assay Laboratory at Akola, AICRP on Pigs at Shirwal, Swine Fever Surveillance Center and Centre for One Health at Nagpur, etc. The University is continuously working for the sustainable development of animal husbandry, dairying, and fisheries sectors in Maharashtra to create a fleet of highly motivated and competent human resources through quality teaching, research, and outreach activities.

About The Host Institute

Placed majestically on the picturesque background of the hills of Sahyadris, the Krantisinh Nana Patil College of Veterinary Science, Shirwal, the constituent college of the Maharashtra Animal & Fishery Sciences University (MAFSU), Nagpur was established in 1988. The institute's name has been given to honour the great freedom warrior Krantisinh Nana Patil who established a parallel government and fought against the British Regime. This institute has an excellent track record of producing meritorious undergraduate students and outstanding ranks in the all-India ICAR JRF Entrance examination. In the ICAR JRF examination, three institute students have secured 1st Rank at the national level. Teaching, research, and extension are core domains of activities and this institute has successfully implemented numerous externally funded research projects. Since its inception in 1998, the Department of Veterinary Public Health has been actively engaged in teaching, research, and extension activities. It offers M.V.Sc. and Ph.D. degree programs, and 18 students have completed their master’s degrees. Research activities have been mainly focused on hygienic aspects of food production, food safety, pathogen monitoring, AMR, and currently the Indian Council of Medical Research sponsored research projects on “Surveillance of antimicrobial resistance at animal-human interface in the context of one health” has been implemented in the department.
