The Western Ghats, also known as the Sahyadris, is a mountain range stretches along the Satara district, and includes many tourist places like Mahabaleshwar, Panchgani, Kas plateau and so on. Kas plateau is a World Natural Heritage site, part of the Sahyadri, rich in its bio-diversity, is situated high hill plateaus and grasslands turns into a 'valley of flowers' during monsoon season, particularly from August to early October. Besides, many forts of Maratha kingdom like Pratapgad, Raigad, Purandar, Sinhgad and so on are situated in the vicinity of Shirwal.
